Castolon Recovery Fund

Debut:  July 2019

Fundraising Goal:  $2.5 million

Top Donors:

In May and June of 2019 a fire ravaged the historic Castolon District at Big Bend National Park consuming the beloved La Harmonia store and adjacent military latrines.  The store was a favorite destination of Big Bend visitors as it was easily accessible by all, had fascinating history and an amazing view to Santa Elena Canyon in the distance.

While the National Park Service has been able to establish temporary visitor services in the area, the Conservancy is working with park staff to complete asbestos removal and conduct a site assessment.  Once that work is complete, we will hold a design charette and begin the process of restoring historic services.  While the building will not be the same, we can still interpret the human history, provide much-needed visitor amenities in the desert and create a feeling of welcome along one of the park's most popular drives.
